2022 Spring Statement - the political reaction

23 Mar 2022

Chancellor Rishi Sunak delivered the 2022 Spring Statement to the House of Commons, and stated that 'cutting taxes means people have immediate help with the rising cost of living'.

The Chancellor said that the Spring Statement 'puts billions back into the pockets of people across the UK and delivers the biggest net cut to personal taxes in over a quarter of a century'.

Meanwhile, Shadow Chancellor Rachel Reeves declared that the Chancellor has 'put up taxes on families and businesses a staggering 15 times over the past two years'.

She continued: 'He talks about providing security for working families but his choices are making the cost-of-living crisis worse, not better.'

The Green Party stated that the Chancellor has been 'reckless at a time of extraordinary need for government action'. Caroline Lucas, Co-leader of the Green Party, said: 'Where's sustainable housing, public transport, NHS and social care policy and vision?'
